Eagles pound Dragons, 11-1

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 24th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team pounded out 11 runs on 11 hits to take the series finale from Tiffin University, 11-1, Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI rises to 6-3 overall in 2012, while Tiffin goes to 3-4 to start the spring campaign.
 
The Screaming Eagles struck first in the opening inning when senior shortstop Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky) singled up the middle to drive in sophomore centerfielder Brad Wannemuehler (Evansville, Indiana). The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Eagles until they exploded for 10 runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth.
 
Senior designated hitter Dylan Mooney (Louisville, Kentucky) doubled in junior catcher Colton White (Springfield, Illinois) to start the scoring in the fourth. Junior third baseman Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana) continued his torrid start to the season by hitting a two-run blast to make the score 4-0 after four innings. The home run was Rounder's team-best second of the year.
 
USI continued its offensive attack on the Tiffin pitching staff and blew the game open with six more runs in the fifth. Wannemuehler, who came to life at the plate during the series, led off with a triple and scored when junior rightfielder B.J. Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) doubled to make the score 5-0. Willis crossed the plate with USI's sixth run when Vance reached on an error to give USI a 6-0 lead.
 
Vance, who stole a base after reaching, scored seventh tally from second base after White reached on an error.
 
White progressed to third as the Eagles loaded the bases for junior second baseman Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana), who drove in the eighth run of the game with a walk. Senior first baseman Todd Martin (Rockport, Indiana) singled in the ninth run, while Wannemuehler pushed the 10th run across the plate with a second bases-loaded walk.
 
Vance crossed the plate for a second time in the sixth to make the score 11-0. The senior shortstop doubled to lead off the sixth and scored on the RBI single by Rounder. 

Rounder finished the day with a team-high three RBIs, while Vance had a team-best three hits.
 
On the mound, USI freshman right-hander Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) kept the Dragons kept off balance offensively for the second game in row. Wright (2-0) went eight innings, allowing three hits and recorded two strike outs.
 
Junior right-hander Keith Greer (Lowell, Indiana) finished the game for USI, allowing an unearned run in the ninth on three hits.
 
USI hits the road for the next three games, travelling to the University Montevallo March 6-7. The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field March 9 and March 11 to play the University of Illinois Springfield in the Dunn Hospitality Tournament.
