HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team was perfect in the first weekend of Great Lakes Valley Conference play after defeating Northern Kentucky University, 6-3, Saturday afternoon in Highland Heights, Kentucky. USI rises to 15-2 overall and 2-0 in the GLVC, while NKU falls to 9-4, 1-1 GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles took two of the doubles and nearly the third to start the match. Sophomore
Santiago Lopez and freshman
Michael Kuzaj posted an 8-6 victory at number one doubles, while senior
Diego Gimenez and junior
Juan Quiroz got the second win at number two doubles, 9-7.
Juniors
Ben Boesing and
Rodrigo Flores at number three doubles narrowly missed giving USI doubles sweep after losing in a tie breaker 9-8 (7-4).
USI went up 4-1 after Quiroz and Boesing posted straight set wins at number one and three singles, respectively. Lopez clinched the victory for USI by winning six-straight points at number two singles after trailing 3-0 in the tie-breaking third set. Gimenez finished the scoring for USI with a straight-set win at number five singles.
The next action for the Eagles is April 6 when they return the friendly surroundings of the USI Tennis Courts and host the Flyers of Lewis University. The USI-Lewis match starts a five-match homestand to end the 2011-12 regular season for the Eagles.
