Eagles start GLVC play with shutout

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team started 2011-12 Great Lakes Valley Conference action with a 9-0 shutout of Bellarmine University Friday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky. USI rises to 14-2 overall and 1-0 in the GLVC, while Bellarmine falls to 5-10, 0-2 GLVC.
 
Three straight wins in doubles gave the Screaming Eagles a commanding lead to start the match. The combinations of senior Diego Gimenez and junior Juan Quiroz at number two doubles and juniors Ben Boesing and Rodrigo Flores at number three doubles put USI on the scoreboard with 8-3 wins, respectively.
 
The Eagles completed the doubles sweep with a 9-8 (7-4) tiebreaker win by sophomore Santiago Lopez and freshman Michael Kuzaj at number one doubles.
 
USI finished the shutout by taking all six of the singles matches, four in straight sets. The Eagles were led in singles action by Kuzaj, who won 6-0, 6-0 at number four, and Boesing, who posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at number three.
 
USI ends the weekend conference trip Saturday at 9 a.m. (CDT) against the Norse of Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Kentucky. The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Tennis Courts April 6 when they host the Flyers of Lewis University.
