EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 15
th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team had to fight its way to a doubleheader split against Maryville University to start Great Lakes Valley Conferences action Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Saints took the opener, 12-4, while the Screaming Eagles came from behind to get the nightcap, 10-9.
USI finishes the day to 10-5 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC, while Maryville goes to 5-6, 1-1 GLVC.
In the second game victory, the Eagles had to come back from 5-1 and 8-4 deficits to get the 10-9 nightcap win. Junior outfielder
B.J. Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) went four-for-four with one run scored and one RBI to lead the Eagles, while sophomore rightfielder
Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) followed with three hits and a pair of runs scored.
The Eagles opened the nightcap with a single tally in the first before the Saints scored one in the second and four in the third to take a 5-1 advantage. USI battled back to cut the deficit to 5-4 when Maryville added three in the top of the fifth to regain the four-run advantage, 8-4.
USI rallied with five runs in the fifth to take back the lead, 9-8. The five runs were manufactured on four hits, two walks, and a Saints error.
The Eagles added the eventual game-winning tally in the bottom of the sixth when senior shortstop
Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky) scored on a fielding error by Maryville centerfielder Colby White after Weinzapfel doubled to left center.
On the mound, junior left-hander
Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois) picked up the win in relief of senior left-handed starter
Scott Cole (Patrick, Virginia). Carver (2-1) got the Eagles out of the Saint's four-run third after they had chased Cole. Cole allowed eight runs, two earned, on six hits and seven walks during 4.2 innings of work.
USI freshman right-hander
Justin Ahlbrand (Evansville, Indiana) pitched a scoreless sixth before allowing a walk in the seventh and giving way to sophomore right-hander
Jim Mulvaney (Mt. Vernon, Illinois). Mulvaney allowed the inherited runner to score during the seventh, but shut the door to earn his first save of the season.
The Saints scored early and often in the opener and posted a 12-4 win. Maryville cranked out its 12 runs on 20 hits against USI senior right-hander
Silas Dill (Bernie, Missouri), junior right-hander
Ben Lady (Louisville, Kentucky), and Mulvaney. Dill (2-3) started and took the loss for USI, allowing nine runs on 10 hits and three walks.
At the plate, senior second baseman
Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana) led USI with three hits and a RBI. Willis followed with a pair of hits and two runs scored, while junior third baseman
Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana) had two hits, a run scored, and one RBI.
The Eagles concludes the six-game homestand Sunday against the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The first pitch for the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
