USI men's tennis starts second half Friday

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team is looking for a third straight NCAA Division II Midwest Regional appearance, as it begins its spring season February 3 against Albilene Christian University in Murray, Kentucky. The Eagles posted a 3-0 mark during the fall season  and were led by ALL-GLVC senior Diego Gimenez and ALL-GLVC East junior Juan Quiroz.

Gimenez and Quiroz, who won the ITA regional tournament as a doubles team and placed sixth at the ITA championship this fall, combined for an 11-4 mark during the first half of the season.  Quiroz was 6-3 in singles during the fall after posting a 15-5 mark in 2010-11. Gimenez was 9-2 in singles during the first half of 2011-12.

Junior Ben Boesing continued to be a dominating force in singles, recording a 9-2 mark in the fall.  He was 15-2 last year.

Last season, the Screaming Eagles had a 15-8, 4-1 GLVC, record, and made its second straight trip to the NCAA Division II regionals. The Eagles bowed out of the tournament after losing in the second round to Drury. USI also made it to the championship match of the GLVC Tournament where they fell to Rockhurst University 5-3.

The Eagles start the spring half of the year with 10-straight road matches before playing at the USI Tennis Courts March 12 at 2 p.m. when they host Lindsey Wilson College.
