USI takes advantage of UIndy in 9-4 win

EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – The 14th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team took advantage of eight University of Indianapolis errors in winning a 9-4 decision Friday night at the USI Baseball Field. USI raises its record 29-13 overall and 21-6 in the GLVC, while UIndy falls to 24-17, 13-16 GLVC.
 
The Screaming Eagles sent 11 batters to the plate and scored all the runs they would need in a five-run third inning. USI, which was aided by three UIndy errors in the third, went on to seal the victory with a run in the fifth and three more in the seventh.
 
USI senior leftfielder Michael Huling (South Bend, Indiana) led the Eagles in the win. Huling, who made three spectacular catches in leftfield, was two-for-five with a run scored and two RBIs. Junior shortstop Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky) and senior second baseman Ben Griggs followed Huling with two RBIs each.
 
On the mound, senior right-hander Trevor Leach (Danville, Illinois) made the most of his final regular season start at the USI Baseball Field. Leach (9-2) allowed four runs, three earned, on 10 hits, while striking six in going the distance. He also threw 144 pitches, 94 for strikes, and did not walk a batter in his sixth complete game of the season.
 
The Eagles and the Greyhounds continue the series Saturday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader. The series concludes Sunday with a noon single game. Sunday is Senior Day for the Eagles, who will honor 11 seniors prior to the first pitch.
