EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team's rally from a 2-1 deficit came up just short as the Screaming Eagles fell to Lewis University, 5-4, Friday afternoon at the USI Tennis Courts.
USI (6-9, 0-4 GLVC) trailed 2-1 after dropping 2-of-3 in doubles play, but victories at number two, three, and four singles knotted the match at 4-4.
Freshman Logan Ackerman nearly overcame a one-set deficit at number five singles, but Lewis's Jody Wagner prevailed with a 7-6 (7-1) win in the second set to clinch the victory for the visiting Flyers.
The Eagles, who played without number two singles player Gretchen Cantwell, were forced to shift their lineup for the third consecutive match.
USI, however, battled through adversity as it nearly pulled out the victory. Senior Katie Jo Clagg overturned a one-set deficit to defeat Bayley Brown—the daughter of former USI men's tennis coach Ross Brown—in three sets at number two singles.
Freshman Lindsey White, who normally plays at number four singles, won in straight sets at number three singles, while freshmen Ellen Stumpf moved up a slot for a straight-set victory at number four singles.
Stumpf led the Eagles with a pair of wins Friday as she teamed up with sophomore Jodie Petty for a 9-8 (7-3) victory at number three doubles. The Eagles were nipped at number one doubles as Lewis picked up a 9-8 (7-4) win to grab the early lead.
The Eagles return to action Saturday at 10 a.m. when they host the University of Indianapolis at the USI Tennis Courts.
