Eagles roll past the Miners, 12-0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 15th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team started its final homestand of the year with a 12-0 shutout of Missouri University of Science and Technology Friday evening at the USI Baseball Field. USI goes to 32-9 overall and 18-3 in the GLVC, while Missouri S&T goes to 12-27, 9-12 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles scored all of the runs they would need in the second inning when junior catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) capped off a six-run rally with a three-run home run. Mooney's blast was his team-best ninth of the season.

The Eagles went on to score four more times in the third and one more in the fourth and eighth. The leading hitter for USI was junior centerfielder Justin Blinn (Vincennes, Indiana), who was three-for-four With two runs scored and a RBI.

On the mound, junior right-hander Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) gave the Eagles seven strong-shutout innings to get his seventh win of the spring. He scattered five hits and struck out five, while allowing only one runner to reach third and two to reach second.

Leach (7-0) is 19-1 in three seasons for the Eagles, 18-0 in the last two years. The USI career-record for wins is 25, set by Todd Niemeier between 1992-95.

Junior left-hander Scott Handley (Schererville, Indiana) and sophomore pitcher/second baseman Brad Vance finished the game for the Eagles, pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth.

The Eagles and the Miners continue the four-game series Saturday with a single game at 2 p.m. The series concludes Sunday with a noon doubleheader and Senior Day for the Eagles.
