ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team swept a doubleheader at Maryville University Saturday afternoon to start a four-game series in St. Louis, Missouri. USI won the opener 8-1 and completed the sweep with a 7-1 nightcap victory.
The Screaming Eagles, who have won nine straight, raised their records to 19-7 overall and 8-2 in the GLVC, while the Saints fell to 4-15, 1-9 GLVC.
The Eagles scored eight times in the first four innings to win the opener, 8-1. USI pushed a pair of runs across the plate in the first and third innings and capped off the scoring with a four-run fourth. '
USI junior catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) led the Eagles in the first game, going three-for-four with two runs scored, four RBIs, a double and a home run. Mooney is hitting .485 with 12 runs scored, 14 RBIs, four doubles, and three home runs in the last eight games.
On the mound, junior right-hander Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) went the distance to post his fifth win of the year. Leach (5-0) allowed nine hits and one run, while striking out five batters. The one run allowed is the runner to cross the plate against the senior right-hander in the last 18 innings of work.
In the nightcap, junior right-hander Taylor Dennis (Covington, Indiana) held the Saints to just two hits in the first five innings and led the Eagles to a 7-1 win. Dennis (2-1) allowed five hits and one run, while striking out a season-high nine batters.
The Eagles provided all of the offensive support Dennis would need in the second inning when they plated a pair of runners. USI would go on to score two more in the third, one in the fifth and finish it scoring with two tallies in the sixth. Senior shortstop Wandy Rosario (Boston, Massachusetts) and junior centerfielder Justin Blinn (Vincennes, Indiana) led the USI hitters with two RBIs each.
USI and Maryville are scheduled to complete the four-game series Sunday with a noon doubleheader.
