EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 19th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team allowed 10 unearned runs and lost to the University of Indianapolis, 12-10, Friday night at the USI Baseball Field. USI falls to 9-6 overall and 0-1 in the GLVC, while UIndy goes to 7-6, 3-0 GLVC.
After the Greyhounds put a six-spot on the scoreboard in the top of the second, the Screaming Eagles scored nine unanswered over the next four inning to take a 9-6 lead.
The Eagles woke up offensively in the bottom half of the second inning and cut the Greyhound led to 6-4 by taking advantage of five walks by UIndy pitching.USI would tie the game 6-6 in the bottom of the fourth, scoring twice on a pair of hits and another two walks.
The Eagles took the lead 9-6 in the bottom of the fifth. Senior catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) led off with a single and scored on a double by senior rightfielder Caleb Ehmke (Waterloo, Indiana). Ehmke crossed the plate with the eighth USI run on a single by junior first baseman Adam Enright (Hammond, Indiana).
Enright would later score the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly the junior leftfielder Michael Huling (South Bend, Indiana). Enright had advance to third after senior third baseman Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee) was hit by a pitch and freshman designated hitter Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana) grounded out to second base.
The UIndy offense would get back into gear in the top of the sixth, scoring three times to knot the game up at 9-9 and twice in the seventh to take the lead 11-9. USI cut the two-run led in half with a tally in the bottom of the seventh when Enright scored for the third time in the game on a ground out by senior shortstop/pitcher Wandy Rosario (Boston, Massachusetts).
The Greyhounds re-extended the lead to two-runs with a tally in the ninth to make the score, 12-10. USI tried to steal the game in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to score after loading the bases with one out.
Junior right-hander Mark Walther (Kankakee, Illinois) took the loss in relief. Walther (0-2) pitch 2.2 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out four.
The game started with USI junior right-hander Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) on the mound. Leach struck out a career-high seven Greyhounds, but allowed seven hits and nine runs (one earned) in 5.1 innings of work.
The Eagles and the Greyhounds conclude the two-game series Saturday with a single game at 1 p.m. USI finishes its 12-game homestand Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Kentucky Wesleyan College.
