USI men's tennis starts GLVC action 1-1

Evansville, Ind. The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team went 1-1 in its first weekend of GLVC play by losing to the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 5-1, and defeating to Quincy University, 9-0, on the road Friday and Saturday. The Screaming Eagles are 5-12 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC. 

The Eagles began conference play by dropping the 5-1 decision to UMSL. USI's lone victory in the match came in the form of an 8-3 win at number two doubles by juniors Andrew McGuire(Greenwood, Indiana) and Ryan McDaniel (Bargersville, Indiana). 

Two the three completed singles were close, but did not go the right way for the Eagles. Junior Christoph Burger (Germany) and sophomore Bodene Scott (Australia) lost in a tie-breakers at number one and four singles. 

In Saturday's match against Quincy, the Eagles recorded their first shutout of the year, 9-0.

USI took a 3-0 lead in doubles when Burger and Scott won at number one, 8-4, and McDaniel and McGuire won at number two, 1-0, when the Hawks Adam Albertsen and Matt Pellock retired.

Burger, McGuire, McDaniel and Scott posted singles wins to seal the victory. The Eagles completed the sweep when the Hawks defaulted at number five and six singles. 

The Eagles return to action at the USI Tennis Courts Monday when they host Northern Kentucky University for a 2:30 p.m. non-conference match.
