EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team completed a sweep of the conference crowns in 2004-05 by winning the GLVC Tournament championship Saturday morning at the Purdue University Recreational Sports Center. Top-seeded USI won the championship match, 5-0, over third-seeded University of Indianapolis.
The Screaming Eagles (12-6) have appeared in the GLVC Tournament championship match each of the last seven seasons, winning five of the since 1998. USI also won the GLVC regular season title earlier this month for the fifth time since 1998 and the first time since 2002.
The tournament championship gives USI the GLVC's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division II Tournament scheduled for May 5-7. The site of the regional is yet to be announced.
The USI doubles teams – sophomore Joe Epkey (Greenwood, Indiana) and junior Ryan Hughes(England) at number one doubles freshman Jarrod Epkey (Greenwood, Indiana) and senior Kyle Taylor (Veedersburg, Indiana) at number two doubles and senior Nim Shetty (India) and senior Evan Luttrell (Logansport, Indiana) – started the match by winning all three to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead going into the singles matches.
Jarrod Epkey and Taylor would seal the victory in singles play by post a pair of straight set 6-1, 6-1 wins at number two and six singles.
