USI starts postseason play Tuesday

Screaming Eagles are 8th seed, take on #5 Morehead State

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — University of Southern Indiana Baseball enters Ohio Valley Conference Championship play for the fourth-straight season Wednesday when it takes on the fifth-seeded Morehead State in game two at Mtn Dew Park in Marion, Illinois. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
 
The Screaming Eagles (27-27, 10-17 OVC), which are eligible for NCAA postseason play this year, while the MSU Eagles (31-23, 15-12 OVC) are the eighth seed. The winner of this matchup will take on fourth-seeded Little Rock (30-25, 16-11 OVC) Wednesday at 7 p.m.
 
The other half of the bracket features sixth-seeded Lindenwood University (29-26, 13-14 OVC) versus seventh-seeded UT Martin (26-28, 11-15 OVC) in the 3 p.m. game Tuesday. The winner will take on third-seeded Southeast Missouri State (38-16, 18-9 OVC) at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
 
The top-seeded SIU Edwardsville (32-22, 19-7 OVC) and second-seeded Eastern Illinois (31-19, 18-9 OVC) received byes to the double-elimination portion of the tournament Thursday.
 
The OVC Championship, presented by SERVPRO, runs Wednesday through Saturday (May 21-24) and features the top eight teams during the regular season.
 
For the fourth year in a row, the bracket includes four single-elimination games on Wednesday, with the winners advancing to the double-elimination portion of the bracket, which will include the top two seeds (who receive a bye until Thursday games).

USI Baseball OVC Championship Notes:
 
USI clinches spot in OVC postseason. The USI Screaming Eagles clinched a spot in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship after taking two of three from Lindenwood University during the final weekend of the season. The Screaming Eagles qualified for their fourth-straight trip to the OVC Championship and are eligible for the NCAA postseason this year.
 
USI wins final series of the season. The USI Screaming Eagles took the all-important final series of the season, winning two of three at home versus Lindenwood. USI captured the opener, 8-4, lost the middle game, 10-2, but clinched the series with a 14-9 win.   
 
Homestand leaders. Junior infielder Parker Martin led USI in the series win over Lindenwood by hitting .455 (5-11) with two doubles and three RBI. Graduate outfielder Noah Foster followed with .444 with a double, triple, and two RBI, while senior shortstop Clayton Slack batted .417 with a double and three RBI.  
 
Last 10 games. USI is 3-7 in the last 10 games with the Screaming Eagles hitting .288 and posting an 8.16 ERA. Senior outfielder Hunter Miller led the hitters with a .500 average (19-38) and three home runs. Junior infielder Parker Martin has a team-best 11 RBI in the last 10 games. 
 
USI after nine weeks in the OVC. The Screaming Eagles finished the OVC slate with a 10-17 league mark after nine weeks. Senior outfielder Hunter Miller leads USI in OVC play with a .424 average, while senior first baseman Patrick McLellan is hitting .346. Senior catcher/designated hitter Micajah Wall has a team-high 20 RBI in league play. Sophomore right-hander Ean DiPasquale has a team-best three wins in OVC action. Junior right-hander Ryan Weller has struck out a team-high 30 batters.
 
USI in non-conference action. USI is 17-10 in non-conference action this spring. Senior first baseman Patrick McLellan leads USI in non-conference action with a .387 mark (41-106) and is second with 30 RBI, while senior shortstop Clayton Slack is second with a .383 average (36-98) and a team-best 31 RBI.  Junior right-handers Trey O'Neil, Abdriel Figueroa, and Levin East lead USI on the mound with three victories each.
 
Hitting at home/on the road. The USI hitters have been cool while on the road this season. The Screaming Eagles are batting .314 (269-856) in 26 home games this year, while hitting .280 (270-964) in the 28 road games.
 
Pitching at home vs. on the road. USI hurlers are 20-6 at home with a 4.78 ERA, while going 7-21 on the road with a 7.07 ERA.
 
Multi Games. Senior first baseman Patrick McLellan leads the Screaming Eagles with 22 multi-hit games this year. McLellan also leads the team with 14 multi-RBI contests.
