CINCINNATI - University of Southern Indiana Men's Golf tied for sixth at the Xavier University Gateway Logistics Invitational at Maketewah Country Club Tuesday.
In its third consecutive appearance, USI posted its best finish at the invitational, tying for sixth with a two-day score of 40-over-par 880 (303-282-295). Host Xavier took first place with a 1-over 841 (288-274-279).
Sophomore
Ingtawan Wangrungwichaisri led the Screaming Eagles with an 8-over-par 218 (75-72-71). Wangrungwichaisri tied for 19
th for his third top-20 this fall.
In the opening round, Wangrungwichaisri and graduate senior
Jonas Arnstrom-Bakker set the early pace for the Screaming Eagles with rounds of 5-over 75. Wangrungwichaisri had a team-best four birdies in the first round, with Arnstrom-Bakker close behind with three.
After a collective slow start, the Screaming Eagles made a huge jump in round two, improving their team score by 21 strokes. Arnstrom-Bakker posted a 4-under 66, with six birdies, for USI's best individual round of the tournament and tied for the fifth-best 18-hole score in program history. His 66 was also USI's lowest round score of the fall, and his 4-under-par round matched the team's best score-to-par round of the fall, which he set last week at the Arkansas State University Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate. Freshman
Loic Simard was one stroke behind with a 3-under 67 that included five birdies, marking his best round as a Screaming Eagle this fall. The two performances helped the Screaming Eagles climb to fifth place to close out Monday's play.
In round three, Wangrungwichaisri and senior
Hunter Reynolds led USI with matching 1-over-par 71s. Wangrungwichaisri's round was highlighted by an eagle on hole seven. Reynolds recorded his best invitational round, featuring four birdies. However, more challenging conditions and scores made it difficult for the Screaming Eagles to maintain the top-five standing they had entering the final round.
USI Men's Golf will have a quick turnaround to close out its fall schedule, as the Screaming Eagles host the University of Evansville Thursday in the Battle of the Expressway at Western Hills Country Club in Mt. Vernon, Indiana. Thursday's match-play event will be the third edition of the fall head-to-head battle, with USI looking to win after narrowly falling overall by a point last fall.
