SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. The University of Southern Indiana men's golf team placed 11th in the Great Lakes Fall Regional hosted by Grand Valley State University at Hawk's Head Golf Course in South Haven, Michigan. The tournament is the first of three regular season regional tournaments that help determine team selection for the NCAA Division II Tournament in May.
USI shot a team 607 (300-307) to place 11th, 23 strokes back of tournament winner Ferris State University. FSU posted a 584 (294-290) to win by six strokes over Bellarmine University, who had a 590 (293-297).
The Screaming Eagles were led by junior
Blake Hilliard (Olney, Illinois) and sophomore
Drew Dunkerly (Linton, Indiana), both shooting a 36-hole 152 and tying for 41st. Dunkerly shot USI's best round of the tournament with a 73 on the first day and completed play with a 79 in the final 18 holes.
Hilliard shot a consistent 76 in both rounds.
The Eagles take a break from tournament action Friday when they play an exhibition dual match against the University of Evansville. Tee-time for the shotgun start at Cambridge Golf Course is 1:30 p.m.
USI will conclude fall action in a pair of tournament in Alabama. The Eagles will play in the North Alabama Invitational October 9-10 at the Cypress Lake Country Club in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and in the Indian Bayou Invitational October 16-17 at the Indian Bayou Country Club in Destin, Florida.
