USI begins home stretch with 10-game homestand

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The University of Southern Indiana baseball team enters the final third of the 2016 regular season by starting a 10-game homestand at the USI Baseball Field. The homestand begins with a single-game against Oakland City University Wednesday at 6 p.m.
 
In addition to the match-up with OCU on Wednesday, USI (22-14, 11-5 GLVC) is slated to host a four-game series with Lewis University April 23-24; a single game against the University of Missouri-St. Louis April 27; and a four-game set versus Saint Joseph's College April 30-May 1. The USI-SJC doubleheader on May 1 is Senior Day for the Screaming Eagles.

SCREAMING EAGLES BASEBALL NOTES:
 
USI enters the week tied for 1st in GLVC East. USI, 11-5 in the league, starts this week in a tie for first in the GLVC East Division with the University of Indianapolis (11-5 GLVC). The Eagles and the Greyhounds lead Bellarmine University (10-6 GLVC) by one game and Lewis University (9-7 GLVC) by two games in the division. USI finishes the regular season on the road when it visits UIndy for a four-game series May 8-10.
 
Eagles go 3-2 on road trip. USI went 3-2 last week on the weather-shortened road swing. The Eagles started the week with a 13-7 loss to Kentucky Wesleyan College, but rebounded to take three of four from McKendree University over the weekend.
 
Hitting leaders on the road. Sophomore second baseman Sam Griggs (Evansville, Indiana) and senior catcher Ryan Bertram (Zionsville, Indiana) were USI's leading hitters on the road with .476 (10-21) and .444 (8-18) respectively. Sophomore designated hitter/outfielder Drake McNamara (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) led the squad with three home runs in the series with McKendree, while senior third baseman Trent Gunn (Tell City, Indiana) drove in a team-high nine RBIs.
 
Standing tall on the mound. Junior right-hander Colin Nowak (Carol Stream, Illinois), junior right-hander Devin Williams (Evansville, Indiana), and freshman right-hander Austin Krizan (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) each won a game last week and did not allow an earned run in a combined 24 innings of work. Williams has won a team-high five games and is boasting a team-best 1.61 ERA in 2016, while Krizan and Nowak follow with a 2.05 and 2.66 ERA, respectively. Junior right-hander Lucas Barnett (Sellersburg, Indiana) has struck out a team-high 55 batters.
 
Record setting inning versus McKendree. USI set a single-inning school record by hitting three home runs in the fourth frame of game two Sunday versus McKendree. Senior rightfielder Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore designated hitter/outfielder Drake McNamara hit back-to-back shots before senior first baseman Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana) hit the third blast of the frame.
 
USI season leaders. Senior rightfielder Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) leads the Eagles with a .354 batting average, while senior centerfielder Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana) is second at .349. Sophomore second baseman Sam Griggs (Evansville, Indiana) is the team leader with 27 RBIs, while sophomore designated hitter/outfielder Drake McNamara has hit a team-best five home runs.
 
Leaders in the last 10 games. Sophomore second baseman Sam Griggs has led the way over the last 10 games, posting a .410 average, while senior third baseman Trent Gunn (Tell City, Indiana), who has raised his 2016 batting average 81 points over the last three weeks, has driven in a team-high 12 RBIs in the last 10 contests. Junior right-handers Devin Williams and Colin Nowak are 1-0 each with 0.00 ERAs in 14 innings each.
 
Striking the zone. Junior right-hander Devin Williams has been pounding the strike zone, averaging 7.7 strikeouts per game in his last three starts. He also has a 0.43 ERA in the last three starts on the mound.
 
Leading the GLVC in pitching. USI leads the GLVC and ranks 16th nationally in pitching with a 3.49 ERA. Junior right-hander Devin Williams ranks 16th nationally with the 1.61 ERA.
 
Kempf chasing records. USI senior rightfielder Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) is chasing several school records this spring. Kempf, currently, is second all-time with 265 hits (record 270); tied for fourth with 51 doubles (record 63); eighth with 152 runs scored (record 183); and 10th with 193 games played (record 213).
 
Carr hoping to steal a record. USI senior centerfielder Hamilton Carr is closing on the Eagles' stolen base record with 72 career thefts (record 86).
 
Archuleta at USI. USI Head Coach Tracy Archuleta reached 500 all-time victories and became the Eagles' all-time winningest coach in program history. Archuleta has a USI record of 362-185 (.662) in eight-plus seasons and is 510-309 (.623) in 13-plus seasons as the head coach. He has been named the ABCA Division II Coach of the Year twice (2010 and 2014) after leading the Screaming Eagles to a pair of national championships. Archuleta also has earned a pair of GLVC Coach of the Year awards (2011 and 2014) at USI.
 
USI vs. Oakland City. USI leads the all-time series with Oakland City University, 85-10, after splitting the two games in 2015. The Eagles lost to the Mighty Oaks in the first game, 7-5, but bounced back late in the season to avenge the loss with a 15-10 win.
 
Oakland City in 2016. The Mighty Oaks are 19-20 in 2016, losing four of their last six games.
 
USI vs. Lewis. USI leads the all-time series with Lewis, 57-54, after losing three of four to the Flyers in Romeoville, Illinois, during 2015. The Eagles have won nine of the last 12 games with the Flyers at the USI Baseball Field.
 
Lewis in 2016. The Flyers are 19-13 overall and 9-7 in the GLVC during the 2016 campaign. Lewis, currently, is in fourth in the GLVC East Division after splitting five of its last eight GLVC games.
