SCREAMING EAGLES BASEBALL NOTES VS. EVANSVILLE and UW-PARKSIDE:

USI Baseball was 4-2 in latest homestand.  USI was 4-2 in last week's homestand, splitting a doubleheader with Bellarmine University and taking three of four from GLVC East-leading University of Indianapolis. Leading the way was the pitching staff that had a 3.86 ERA over the six games, compared to the season's 4.27.

Three-straight strong pitching performances. For the first time this year, the Eagles got three strong pitching performances from its starting pitchers in the three wins over UIndy. Junior right-hander Alex Holder threw a one-hitter in game two on Saturday; senior right-hander Matt Chavarria (Carlsbad, New Mexico) threw a second-straight complete game in the opening game win on Sunday, while senior right-hander Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) went nine-innings to win, 1-0, to complete Sunday's doubleheader sweep.

Reverse of fortune. USI was 4-2 during the last week's homestand, reversing the last homestand of 2-5 to start March.

Eagles sweep the GLVC weekly honors. USI swept the GLVC weekly honors with junior right-hander Alex Holder (Princeton, Indiana) winning the conference Pitcher of the Week honor and junior rightfielder Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) being named the GLVC Player of the Week. Holder faced two over the minimum in throwing a one-hitter in the win over UIndy on Saturday, while Kempf hit .526 during the homestand with five runs scored, a triple, a home run, and six RBIs. Kempf also had the game-winning hit in the 10th inning against Bellarmine last Wednesday.

Knocking in the runs. Junior third baseman Trent Gunn (Tell City, Indiana) has been hot in the cleanup spot the last week, driving in nine RBIs during the homestand. Gunn also leads the Eagles with 19 RBIs this season.

Archuleta at the helm. USI Head Coach Tracy Archuleta has a USI record of 322-164 (.658) in eight-plus seasons and is 470-288 (.620) in 13-plus seasons as a head coach. He has been named the ABCA Division II Coach of the Year twice (2010 and 2014) after leading the Screaming Eagles to a pair of national championships. He also has earned a pair of GLVC Coach of the Year awards (2011 and 2014).

USI vs. Evansville. The Aces of Evansville lead the all-time series, 30-19, but the Eagles won last spring, 9-4, posting their first win in the series since 1988. UE holds an 8-1 lead in the "Battle at the Braun" series since 2004 (did not play in 2008 and 2012).

USI vs. UW-Parkside. USI holds an all-time series record of 35-26 over UW-Parkside after taking three of four last season in Somers, Wisconsin. The Eagles also hold a 21-7 mark against the Rangers since Head Coach Tracy Archuleta took the helm at USI after five years of leading UW-Parkside.
