EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana senior forward/center
Anna Hackert (Evansville, Indiana) has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the fifth time this season in an announcement by the league's office Monday.
Hackert averaged 24.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per game to lead the Screaming Eagles to conference wins over the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's College this past week.
She began the week by scoring a season-high 35 points and pulling down 16 rebounds in USI's 68-49 win over Indianapolis. She scored 25 points in the second half, including 17 in the final nine minutes that saw the Eagles turn a 42-41 lead into the 19-point victory. Hackert was a perfect 8-of-8 from the field and 9-of-9 from the free throw line in the second half.
Hackert returned to the court in USI's 71-31 win over Saint Joseph's to score 14 points and grab six rebounds in just 24 minutes of action. She became the first player in school history to eclipse the 300-rebound plateau as she pulled to within eight rebounds of USI's all-time career record of 961, held by GLVC and USI Hall of Famer LeAnn Freeland.
For the week, Hackert shot 70.8 percent from the field on 17-of-24 shooting and was 15-of-16 (.938) from the charity stripe. She leads the Eagles with 16.1 point and 11.2 rebounds per game on the year.
The Memorial High School graduate earns her third GLVC weekly honor in the last four weeks. She has earned eight GLVC Player of the Week honors in her career.
USI (22-5, 14-3 GLVC) concludes the regular season Thursday at 4:45 p.m. (CST) when it visits Bellarmine University for a GLVC East Division bout in Louisville, Kentucky. The Eagles, who have secured a bye in the first round of the GLVC Tournament, can move as high as the No. 3 seed with a win and a University of Wisconsin-Parkside loss to Lewis University.
The Eagles defeated Bellarmine, 65-59, at the PAC in January. Hackert led the Eagles with 16 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks, while senior forward/center
Mary O'Keefe (Edwardsville, Illinois) and senior guard
Autumn Miller (Louisville, Kentucky) each had 10 points. O'Keefe is just six points shy of 1,000 in her career.
Bellarmine (14-11, 9-8 GLVC), which has won six of its last eight games, including an 80-77 double-overtime win over Indianapolis Saturday, defeated USI, 72-62, last year in Knights Hall.
Sophomore guard Whitney Hartlage and freshman guard Raven Merriweather are averaging 9.9 and 9.8 points per game, respectively, to lead the Knights, who are trying to secure a first-round home game.
