Gilbert named to Indiana Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary Team

EVANSVILLE, Ind. --  Former University of Southern Indiana men's basketball player Chad Gilbert '97 (1994-96) was selected for the 2016 Men's Silver Anniversary Team by the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
 
The 2016 Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary Team is based upon outstanding accomplishments as a senior basketball player 25 years ago.  The team includes 13 members of the 1991 Indiana All-Star squad and five other all-state players from Indiana's high school class of 1991.
 
The 1991 Silver Anniversary Team includes Gilbert, Mr. Basketball Glenn Robinson, Alan Henderson, Daimon Beathea, Brandon Brantley, Brian Evans, Andy Elkins, Marlon Fleming, Jeff Massey, LaMar Morton, Steve Nicodemus, Andre Owens, LaSalle Thompson, Chris Wilburn, Lance Barker, Tony Etchison, Jerry Freshwater and Jason Williams. Gilbert helped lead the 1994-95 Screaming Eagles to their first NCAA Division II National Championship under the direction of Head Coach Bruce Pearl with a school record 29 victories (a mark that still stands today). The 1996 GLVC Player of the Year remains among the USI top-20 all-time in scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest in 1994-95 and 1995-96.
 
The 1996 All-American was named the 1995 NCAA II Great Lakes Regional Most Outstanding Player after averaging 25.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in the three games. He also shot 73.0 percent from the field (27-37) and 85.0 percent from the line (17-20).
 
Prior to his collegiate career, Gilbert was a three-year varsity starter, scored 1,392 career points, averaged 26.9 points and 8.8 rebounds a game as a senior at Charlestown High School. He led Charlestown to one conference and sectional championship title, also leading the 1990 CHS team to the best record in school history (21-3). The 1991 Conference Player of the Year was a McDonald's All-American nominee was named first-team All-State by Louisville Courier-Journal and was also featured on the cover of Hoosier Basketball magazine in 1991. Gilbert holds assist and free throw records at CHS.
 
Following his prep career, Gilbert played two seasons at Indiana State University before transferring to USI in 1993-94.
 
The 2011 USI Athletic Hall of Fame inductee entered the coaching ranks after college, posting a 264-51 record in 13 years as head coach at Jeffersonville High School (both girls and boys). In addition to multiple Coach of the Year awards, Gilbert directed the JHS boys and girls to nine conference titles, eight sectionals, five Elite Eight appearances and the 2011 4A girls state championship. Gilbert has been the athletic director at his alma mater, Charlestown, since 2013.
