EVANSVILLE, Ind.– University of Southern Indiana junior midfielder
Josh Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) ignited an offensive explosion that propelled the Screaming Eagles to a 5-1 victory over Maryville University Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles rise to 2-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the GLVC, while the Saints go to 2-2-3, 1-2-1 GLVC.
Weinzapfel gave USI an opening half lead for the first time this season when he recorded his first goal of the year at 12:38. The USI goal in the first half also snapped a four-match, 413 minute scoreless streak that started in the finals minutes of the season-opener at Kentucky Wesleyan College.
After carrying the 1-0 lead through the intermission, Weinzapfel turned his attention to helping freshman forward
Braiden Acton (Evansville, Indiana) score his first two collegiate goals. Acton pushed the lead to 3-0 when he converted a pair of identical crosses by Weinzapfel at 46:18 and 50:41 of the second half.
USI sophomore forward
Steve Sokol (Perth, Australia) increased the Eagles' lead to 4-0 with his first goal of the season at 60:41 off a pass from senior forward
Caleb Mathers (Clarkston, Michigan). The Eagles would hold onto the four-goal lead until Maryville produced its only tally of the match at 78:26 to cut the USI advantage to 4-1.
Sokol would get the goal back for USI at 87:13 when he found the back of the net for a second time. The second goal of the year by Sokol came off a pass from freshman forward
Keaton Voegerl (Columbus, Indiana), who recorded his first collegiate assist.
Between the posts, junior goalkeeper
Auston Bruder (Evansville, Indiana) and freshman goalkeeper
Adam Zehme (Orland Park, Illinois) combined for the victory. Bruder had a pair of saves in 75 scoreless minutes, while Zehme allowed the Maryville goal in his 14:46 minutes of work.
USI starts the second half of the four-game homestand Friday when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for a 7:30 p.m. match. The season's first homestand comes to an end September 28 when the Eagles welcome Lewis University to Strassweg Field for a 2:30 p.m. match-up.
