Box Score (Sortable); Box Score (HTML) INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The eighth-ranked University of Southern Indiana needed 16 inning in game two to complete a doubleheader sweep of the University of Indianapolis, 4-1 and 10-7, Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles go to 39-9 overall and 29-5 in the GLVC, while Indianapolis finishes the day 29-21, 23-13 GLVC.
USI, which clinched the top seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament with the game one win, must wait until the end of the league schedule Sunday to determine its first round opponent in the conference tournament, which is slated for May 8-11. The Eagles are scheduled to play all of its games at Bosse Field.
In the opener, senior designated hitter
Jonathon Wandling (Evansville, Indiana) hit a two-run home run and senior right-handed pitcher
Matt Bowles (Mt. Washington, Kentucky) threw seven strong innings to get the Eagles a 4-1 victory.
Wandling was three-for-three with a run scored, two RBIs and a home run in the opener. The two-run, fourth-inning home run was the margin of victory for the Eagles and Wandling's first of the season.
Bowles (8-2) won his team-best eighth game of the season by allowing one run on nine hits and a walk, while striking out three hitters.
In the nightcap, the Eagles scored three times in the top of the 16
th inning to defeat the Greyhounds, 10-7.
USI scored first with a tally in the first inning before UIndy went on to take 3-1 and 4-3 leads through four innings. The Eagles would rally with two runs in the sixth and seventh to lead 7-4.
The Greyhounds would respond forced game two into extra innings with two runs in the eighth and a tally in the ninth to knot the game, 7-7. UIndy also had a run taken away in the eighth when USI Head Coach
Tracy Archuleta won a debate on a balk call that plated a run.
Pitching would take over for both teams until the 16
th when USI scored three-unearned runs to post the winning 10-7 score. The big play of the inning was Bowles reaching on a two-base error by the Greyhound leftfielder with two outs, scoring sophomore second baseman
Kyle Niemeier (Evansville, Indiana) and senior pinch runner
Brad Wannemuehler(Evansville, Indiana). The Eagles would add an insurance run when Bowles scored on an RBI-single by sophomore catcher
Ryan Bertram (Zionsville, Indiana).
The Eagles rally in the 16
th occurred with two outs and after Archuleta was ejected from the game. Archuleta was ejected arguing a call on the bases.
Overall at the plate, Bowles led the Eagles in the nightcap with three hits, four runs scored, and an RBI.
On the bump, junior right-hander
Jay Hachmeister (Tennysen, Indiana) picked up his first win of the season in relief. Hachmeister (1-0) pitched a pair of scoreless innings, allowing two walks and striking out two.
