USI wins wild one over GVSU, 5-2 GAME SCORE: USI 5, GVSU 2
Box Score (Sortable); Box Score (HTML) EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The eighth-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team advanced to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional championship game by winning a wild one with Grand Valley State University, 5-2, Saturday evening at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles raise their record to 44-12 overall, while the Lakers saw their record fall to 39-12.
Top-seeded USI will play the winner of second-seeded GVSU and third-seeded Drury University Sunday at 4 p.m. for the right to advance to the NCAA II National Championship Series, which is scheduled for May 24-31 in Cary, North Carolina. GVSU and Drury are slated to play their elimination game at noon.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the first inning when sophomore rightfielder
Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) crossed the plate on a ground out by senior designated hitter
Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana). USI would hold onto the 1-0 lead until GVSU pushed a pair of runs across in the second inning to take the 2-1 advantage.
The Lakers' lead would last until the top of the third when USI sophomore catcher
Ryan Bertram (Zionsville, Indiana) knocked in the tying run with a ground out, scoring sophomore first baseman
Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana).
USI would break the tie in the fifth when GVSU committed three throwing errors on one play that plated three Eagles for a 5-2 lead. Cope and junior shortstop
Matt Chavarria (Carlsbad, New Mexico) would cross the plate ahead of Weinzapfel, who circled the bases on a fielder's choice and the three GVSU miscues.
At the end of the game, both teams would have a combined nine errors with GVSU committing six.
Eagles' senior right-hander
David Toth (Danville, Illinois) made the five USI runs stand- up by throwing his first complete game of the season. Toth (5-1) allowed two runs on 10 hits and one walk, while striking out one.
Sunday's regional championship game appearance will be the third for the Eagles since 2007 and under USI Head Coach
Tracy Archuleta. USI finished third nationally in 2007 and won the national championship in 2010.
