SortableEVANSVILLE, Ind.—Quincy University scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to hand the No. 8 University of Southern Indiana baseball team a 2-1 setback Saturday afternoon and force an elimination game in the semifinal round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament Saturday night at Bosse Field.
USI (41-10) scored its only run of the contest in the bottom of the first inning when senior
Brent Weinzapfel hit an RBI-double into centerfield.
Senior hurler
Matt Bowles pitched seven scoreless innings, but Quincy used a three-hit eighth inning to score a pair of runs and take a 2-1 advantage.
USI hitters went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings as Quincy kept its NCAA II Tournament hopes alive while forcing an elimination game for the right to play in the GLVC Championship.
Bowles (8-3) gave up two runs, one earned, off seven hits in 7.1 innings of work. Bowles had five strikeouts and did not allow a walk.
Graham Spraker (4-1) earned the complete-game win for the Hawks (29-25) after fanning nine batters and allowing just one run off four hits.
The Screaming Eagles and Hawks (29-25) will square off for the third time in two days Saturday night when the two teams take the field for an estimated start time of 7 p.m. USI defeated Quincy, 2-1, in the second round Friday afternoon.
