th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team completed the four-game sweep of the University of Illinois Springfield, 5-1, Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI, which has won seven-straight games, rises to 21-7 overall and 13-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Illinois Springfield falls to 17-12, 10-8 GLVC.
After the Prairie Stars took their first lead of the series, 1-0, in the second inning, the Screaming Eagles scored five-unanswered runs with a tally in the bottom of the second and four more runs in the bottom of the fifth. USI took the lead for good in the four-run fifth on a RBI-double by junior catcher
Austin Edge (Whitesville, Kentucky).
Leading the way at the plate, sophomore rightfielder
Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore centerfielder
Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana) had two hits each in the win. The Eagles also got balanced run production from up and down the line-up with five different players driving in runs.
On the mound, senior right-hander
David Toth (Danville, Illinois) settled down after a rough second inning to get his second win of the year. Toth (2-1) allowed the one run on six hits and a walk, while striking out three in seven innings of work.
USI closed out the game on the mound with senior right-hander
Brandon Shaw (Cuba, Illinois) and junior right-hander
Andrew Mercer (Mount Pearl, Newfoundland) throwing a scoreless inning.
The Eagles are scheduled to go on the road next weekend when they travel to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside April 12-13 for a four-game series before returning home for an 11-game homestand.
