EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team posted its second walk off win of the series and captured the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division title with a 5-4 win over Saint Joseph's College Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles go to 35-8 overall and 26-4 in the GLVC, while Pumas fall 16-30, 11-21 GLVC.

The victory takes USI's winning streak to a season-high 14 games and 21 of the last 22 contests. USI is one short of the school record 15-straight set by the 2010 national championship team.

The Eagles scored first, but fell behind to the Pumas, 3-1, through five inning. USI rallied to tie the score, 3-3, in the bottom of the sixth frame before a 57 minute rain delay halted play. USI cut the lead to 3-2 when junior shortstop Matt Chavarria (Carlsbad, New Mexico) scored from second on a fielder's choice and an error.

USI junior third baseman Trent Gunn (Tell City, Indiana) knotted the game at 3-3 when he singled to right field, scoring senior designated hitter Bryce Shoulders (Newburgh, Indiana) from second. Then, the rains came for nearly an hour before the Pumas stranded a pair of Eagles on base.

Saint Joseph's took the lead back in the eighth inning on a pair of walks and a base hit up the middle off USI senior right-handed reliever Brandon Shaw (Cuba, Illinois). Shaw had relieved senior right-handed starter Jonathon Wandling (Evansville, Indiana) after the rain delay.

In the ninth, the Eagles rallied for the win. Senior pinch hitter Brad Wannemuehler (Evansville, Indiana) crossed the plate to tie the score, 4-4, on a single by sophomore rightfielder Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) after walking and advancing to second on a sacrifice.

Kempf moved around the bases on a stolen base and a wild pitch before scoring the fifth and deciding run on a bases-loaded, one-out sacrifice fly by senior leftfielder Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana)

Shaw (5-1) picked up the win for USI, throwing the final three innings. He allowed one run on one hit and three walks, while striking out four.

Wandling went the first six innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and two walks. He also struck out four in the no-decision.

USI is on the road for the last five games of the 2014 regular season when it travels across town to play the University of Evansville Tuesday at 6 p.m. and go north to the University of Indianapolis for a four-game series Friday and Saturday. The USI-UIndy series is slated for 11 a.m. (CDT) doubleheaders each day.
