EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 18
th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team pounded out 21 hits to sweep a doubleheader from Bellarmine University, 4-0 and 11-1, Wednesday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI rises to 26-8 overall and 18-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Bellarmine falls to 16-22, 7-17 GLVC.
USI senior leftfielder
Jonathon Wandling (Evansville, Indiana) crushed a two-run double in the fourth and senior right-hander
Brandon Shaw (Cuba, Illinois) threw a three-hit shutout as the Screaming Eagles took game one, 4-0.
Wandling's two-RBI double to left field highlighted the Eagles' four-run fourth inning that was the margin of victory. USI sophomore catcher
Ryan Bertram (Zionsville, Indiana) drove in the third run with an RBI ground out, while sophomore centerfielder
Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana) singled in the final run of the game.
Shaw made the four-run fourth stand up in throwing his first shutout and complete game of the season. He scattered three hits and two walks, while striking out one batter in his seven innings of work.
In the nightcap, the Eagles had 14 hits and had four players with multiple RBIs as they flew past the Knights, 11-1.
USI sophomore third baseman
Trent Gunn (Tell City, Indiana) led the way for the Eagles with three RBIs in the first two innings on an RBI single and a two-run doubles. Sophomore rightfielder
Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana), senior leftfielder
Bryce Shoulders (Newburgh, Indiana), and Wandling followed with two RBIs each as the Eagles scored four in the first, four in the second, two in the seventh, and one in the eighth for the 11-1 victory.
On the mound, sophomore right-hander
Tyler Nichols (Newburgh, Indiana) posted his first collegiate win in his first collegiate start for the Eagles. Nichols allowed a first inning run before settling down to pitch six solid innings, allowing three hits and striking out five to get the victory.
The Eagles continue the 11-game homestand Friday and Saturday when they host Lewis University for a four-game series. The first pitch for Friday's doubleheader is 2 p.m., while start time Saturday is noon.
