SOMERS, Wis. – The 18
th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team waited out a six-hour delay and a field change to sweep a doubleheader from University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 2-1 and 7-0, Saturday night in Somers, Wisconsin. The Screaming Eagles go to 24-8 overall and 16-4 in the GLVC, while UW-Parkside finishes the day 8-21, 6-16 GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles scored a tally in the fifth and sixth to take game one of the doubleheader, 2-0. USI pushed its first run across the plalte on a sacrifice fly by sophomore centerfielder
Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana), scoring senior leftfielder
Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana), in the fifth, while junior shortstop/relief pitcher
Matt Chavarria (Carlsbad, New Mexico) scored on a wild pitch in the sixth.
On the mound, senior right-hander
Matt Bowles (Mt. Washington, Kentucky) picked up his team-best sixth win of the year. Bowles (6-2) was charged with allowing one run on three hits and three walks, while striking out four batters in six-plus innings of work.
Chavarria relieved Bowles in the seventh and closed out the game for this team-best seventh save of the year. He allowed one hit that drove in the run that was charged to Bowles.
In the nightcap, the Eagles scored twice in the third and three more in the fourth before cruising to a 7-0 victory over the Rangers.
USI opened the scoring with a two-run single by sophomore first baseman
Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana) in the third. The Eagles followed the third inning rally with a three-spot in the fourth.
The Eagles scored three times on three hits in the fourth frame. Carr started the rally with an RBI-double prior to RBI-singles by sophomore catcher
Ryan Bertram (Zionsville, Indiana) and senior shortstop/second baseman
Caleb Eickhoff (Evansville, Indiana).
USI sealed the victory with two runs in the top of the eighth. Senior pinch runner/leftfielder
Brad Wannemuehler (Evansville, Indiana) scored on a wild pitch for the sixth run, while Carr scored on a throwing error after he stole third base.
On the mound, senior right-hander
David Toth (Danville, Illinois) got his third win of the year after throwing eight shutout innings. Toth (3-1) scattered five hits and four walks, while striking out five batters to earn the win.
The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field Wednesday when they host Bellarmine University for a 3 p.m. doubleheader that starts and 11-game homestand. USI, who leads the all-time series with the Knights, 70-65, took the first two with Bellarmine by sweeping a doubleheader in Louisville, 8-2 and 4-3, on April 1.
