Eagles split road trip opening doubleheader

SOMERS, Wis. – The 18th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team used a six-run fourth inning in the nightcap to salvage a doubleheader split with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Friday afternoon in Somers, Wisconsin. USI lost the opener, 3-2, but bounced back to win game two, 9-3.
 
The Screaming Eagles go to 22-8 overall and 14-4 in the GLVC, while UW-Parkside finishes the day 8-19, 6-14 GLVC.
 
USI sophomore rightfielder Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) hit his first collegiate grand slam to cap off a six-run fourth inning as the Eagles to a 9-3 victory over the Rangers. Kempf finished the day three-for-eight with two runs scored and four RBIs.
 
On the mound, senior right-hander Jonathon Wandling (Evansville, Indiana) went all seven innings to get his fifth victory of the year. Wandling (5-1) allowed three runs on eight hits and one walk, while striking out seven batters.
 
In the opener, the Eagles could not hold onto a 2-0 lead and lost a 3-2 decision after allowing three unanswered runs in three of the last four innings.
 
USI got its first run of the game when sophomore outfielder Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana) hit a solo shot in the third inning. The home run was Carr's first of the season.
 
The Eagles increased the lead in the top of the fourth on back-to-back doubles by senior designated hitter Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore third baseman Trent Gunn (Tell City,Indiana).
 
The Rangers cut the Eagles' lead in half with a tally in the sixth before tying the game in the seventh and scoring the winning run in the eighth.
 
On the mound, junior right-hander Andrew Mercer (Mount Pearl, Newfoundland) got the loss in relief for the Eagles. Mercer (1-1) allowed one run on two hits and a walk in 2.2 inning of work.
 
USI junior right-hander Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) got the no-decision after starting the game and working the first 5.1 innings. Wright allowed two runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out one.
 
USI and UW-Parkside complete the four-game series Saturday with a noon doubleheader. The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field Wednesday when they host Bellarmine University for a 3 p.m. doubleheader that starts and 11-game homestand.
