EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Senior outfielder
Brent Weinzapfel went 4-for-4 with two RBIs as the University of Southern Indiana baseball team defeated Augustana College (S.D.), 7-6, in the Dunn Hospitality Classic Sunday night at the USI Baseball Field.
Weinzapfel had an RBI-single in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut a two-run USI deficit in half; then roped a run-scoring double into left-centerfield to cap-off a three-run sixth inning.
USI (7-4) struck first with a tally in the third inning, but Augustana plated a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to take a brief 2-1 lead. Sophomore catcher
Ryan Bertram had an RBI-single in the last half of the fourth as USI tied the contest at 2-2.
After the Vikings (5-4) scored twice in the in the fifth inning to take a 4-2 advantage, the Screaming Eagles roared back in the last part of the fifth with a pair of runs to once again tie the contest at 4-4.
Junior infielder/pitcher
Matt Chavarria, who pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save, had an RBI-single in the fifth inning to tie the contest.
USI sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth inning as it scored three times to take a commanding 7-4 advantage. Sophomore outfielder
Kyle Kempf pushed the first-run across the plate with an RBI-single, while sophomore first baseman
Andrew Cope plated the second tally with an RBI-ground out.
Weinzapfel's double proved to be the difference as Augustana scored twice in the seventh frame to trim USI's cushion to a single run. The Vikings got a runner aboard with two outs in the ninth inning, but Bertram threw out junior outfielder Marcus O'Neill, who was trying to steal second, for the third out of the frame.
Senior right-hander
Brandon Shaw earned his second win of the season after giving up two runs off two hits in three innings of work. Shaw (2-0) fanned six batters while issuing just one walk before giving way to Chavarria.
USI returns to action Tuesday at 1 p.m. when it takes on Augustana to conclude the Dunn Hospitality Classic at the USI Baseball Field. Augustana plays the University of Indianapolis in a doubleheader Monday at the USI Baseball Field.
