LEBANON, Ill. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team split a wild doubleheader with McKendree University Saturday afternoon in Lebanon, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles won game one, 14-0, in a seven-inning, run-ruled victory, while the Bearcats rallied in the nightcap to win, 8-6.
USI sees its record go to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in the GLVC, while McKendree goes to 6-11, 2-6 GLVC.
In the opener, USI sophomore catcher
Ryan Bertram (Zionsville, Indiana) and junior shortstop
Matt Chavarria (Carlsbad, New Mexico) combined for seven hits, seven runs, and four RBIs as the Eagles posted the 14-0 victory. Bertram was three-for-four with two doubles, three runs scored, and three RBIs, while Chavarria was four-for-five with a double, four runs scored, and a RBI.
Offensively, the Eagles took command early by scoring four in the first and six more in the third to lead 10-0 after three frames. USI would close out the seven inning shortened game by scoring three in the sixth and one in the seventh for the 14-0 victory.
On the mound, USI senior right-hander
Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) won his third game of the year. Wright (3-1) pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and striking out one.
USI junior right-hander
Jay Hachmeister (Tennyson, Indiana) finished game for the Eagles, throwing the final two innings. He allowed one hit and struck one in his second outing to the year.
In the nightcap, the Eagles allowed seven unanswered runs and dropped an 8-6 decision to the Bearcats.
USI had command early in the second game, jumping out to a 6-1 lead after two-and-a-half innings. McKendree began to chip away at the USI advantage with one in the third and three in the fourth to tie the game before scoring the game-deciding runs in the sixth for the 8-6 victory.
Eagles' junior right-hander
Scott Haag (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) took the loss for USI in relief. Haag (1-1) allowed two runs on two hits and a pair of walks.
USI senior right-hander
Jonathon Wandling (Evansville, Indiana) started for USI, going the first three innings. Wandling gave up four runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out two in earning the no-decision.
After Wandling's departure in the fourth, senior right-hander
Brandon Shaw (Cuba, Illinois) allowed the tying runs in two-thirds of an inning on one hit and two walks.
Offensive, the Eagles were dynamite early with a tally in the first, four runs in the second, and a final run in the third. Sophomore third baseman
Trent Gunn (Tell City, Indiana) and sophomore centerfielder
Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana) led the Eagles' attack at the plate with two hits each.
USI and McKendree conclude the four-game series Sunday with a noon doubleheader. The final doubleheader of the 10-game road swing is Tuesday when the Eagles travel to Bellarmine University for an 11 a.m. first pitch.
