EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- University of Southern Indiana senior forward/center
Aaron Nelson (Chicago Heights, Illinois) was named first team All-American by Daktronics,
Basketball Times, and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Nelson becomes the 21
st Screaming Eagle in the history of the men's basketball program to be selected for the national honor and 10
th to be recognized by multiple organizations.
Nelson, who also was the GLVC Tournament Most Valuable Player and the GLVC co-Player of the Year, led the Screaming Eagles this year with 19.3 points and 12.7 rebounds per contest. The 12.7 rebounds per game lead the NCAA Division II and the GLVC, while the 19.3 points ranks fourth in the league.
The first-team All-GLVC, NABC All-District, and Daktronics All-Region performer surpassed the USI single-season record for rebounds (368) in last week's conference tournament and set the single-game record for rebounds (27) in a win over Kentucky State University last December. He also has set a record for consecutive double-doubles (15) and double-doubles in a season (24).
Nelson is slated to play in his final collegiate basketball game Friday at 6 p.m. when he represents the East in the NABC Division II All-Star Game at the Ford Center. The All-Star game is a part of the NCAA Division II Elite Eight week in Evansville.
