LIBERTY, Mo. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team swept a doubleheader from William Jewell College, 2-0 and 3-0, and captured the series, 3-1, Sunday afternoon in Liberty, Missouri. USI, which is in a 10-game road swing, goes to 13-5 overall and 5-1 in the GLVC, while WJC ends the day 6-11, 4-4 GLVC.
In the opener, USI sophomore first baseman
Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana) drove in two runs with a one-out triple in the sixth and senior right-hander
Matt Bowles (Mt. Washington, Kentucky) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning as the Screaming Eagles posted a 2-0 win.
Cope capped off a sixth-inning rally that started with a single by freshman catcher
Ryan Bertram (Zionsville, Indiana) and sophomore rightfielder
Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana). Kempf, who had two hits, Cope, and Bertram had all of the hits in game one for the Eagles
Bowles (4-1) won his team-best fourth game of the year by setting down 19 of 24 batters, allowing two hits in the sixth and walking two. He also struck out five Cardinals to earn his first shutout of the year.
In the nightcap, the Eagles took advantage of a pair of Cardinal errors and scored three times in the ninth inning to complete the doubleheader sweep, 3-0. USI pushed the game-winning run across when senior pinch hitter
Jonathon Wandling (Evansville, Indiana) scored on a safety squeeze by senior second baseman/shortstop
Caleb Eickhoff (Evansville, Indiana).
The Eagle bats would go on to score two more insurance runs with the aid of a pair of WJC errors for the 3-0 win. Cope, Bertram, and sophomore leftfielder
Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana) had the hot bats in the nightcap with three hits each.
On the mound, junior right-hander
Scott Haag (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) picked up his first win as an Eagle in relief. Haag pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing one hit.
Junior closer/shortstop
Matt Chavarria (Carlsbad, New Mexico) finished the game for USI on the rubber, setting the Cardinals down in order in the ninth. The save was Chavarria's fourth of the season.
USI also got another tough start in game four, this time from senior right-hander
David Toth (Danville, Illinois). Toth received a no-decision despite pitching a strong seven innings, allowing only three hits and striking out two.
The Eagles continue the road swing March 29- 30 when they travel to McKendree University for a pair of doubleheaders. The two doubleheaders start at noon each day.
