LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team saw a 2-1 lead evaporate as host Bellarmine University handed the Screaming Eagles a 6-3 setback in their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener Saturday.
USI (5-9, 0-1 GLVC) gained wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to forge a 2-1 lead heading into singles play, but the Knights (6-3, 1-0 GLVC) rallied by winning five of the six singles matches to earn the win.
The Eagles started singles play on a positive note as they earned first-set wins in all but two matches. USI, though, saw one-set leads fall by the wayside at No. 1, No. 5, and No. 6 singles as it suffered three-set losses in each contest.
Sophomore
Elizabeth Skinner led the Eagles with a pair of wins. Skinner combined with freshman
Miranda Camp for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles; then earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.
Senior
Morgan Coquerille and sophomore
Elizabeth Wilm teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles to round out USI's victories.
USI's match with Indiana University-Southeast Sunday has been postponed. The Eagles return to action Friday at 1 p.m. (CDT) when they visit the University of Indianapolis for a men's and women's doubleheader.
