WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—University of Southern Indiana sophomores
Tyler Pence and
Tyler Schickel earned All-America honors in the men's 3,000 meters and the men's mile, respectively, Saturday to lead the Screaming Eagles at the NCAA II Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Schickel began the day with a seventh-place showing in the mile. His time of four minutes, 14.52 seconds, was just 4.12 seconds off the winning pace, set by Shippensburg University junior Brayden Burleigh. The award is the first All-America honor for Schickel.
Pence earned his second All-America honor in as many days as he finished fifth in the 3,000 meters. Pence finished the 3,000 meters in 8:22.27, a day after finishing fifth in the 5,000 meters to garner his first-career All-America award.
Sophomore
Johnnie Guy, who earned his fourth-career All-America award Friday in the 5,000 meters, was ninth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:23.40, just .17 seconds shy of eighth-place and another All-America accolade. Schickel was 15th in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:43.60.
University of Alaska-Anchorage senior Micah Chelimo, who was second in the 5,000 meters, finished first in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:15.52. Adam State University junior Kevin Batt, the national champion in the 5,000 meters, was second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:15.53.
USI recorded its second-best team finish at the national meet and its best since 1998 as it placed 13th with 15 points. The Eagles tied for eighth in 1998. Saint Augustine University won the team title with 84.5 points.
The Eagles open the outdoor season March 28-29 when they compete at the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis, Missouri, and the Lindsey Wilson Invitational in Columbia, Kentucky.
