USI opens GLVC action with doubleheader sweep

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference action with a doubleheader sweep of Drury University, 4-1 and 3-1, Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI goes to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in the GLVC, while Drury ends the day 6-5, 0-2 GLVC.
 
The Screaming Eagles scored once in the third, twice in the fifth, and one in the eighth in cruising to a 4-1 victory in the opener. Sophomore rightfielder Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) knocked in the first USI run in the third, while senior second baseman Caleb Eickhoff (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore first baseman Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana) sealed the win with one RBI each in the fifth.
 
Junior shortstop/reliever Matt Chavarria (Carlsbad, New Mexico) drove in an insurance run in the eighth for the 4-1 final.
 
On the mound, senior right-hander Jonathon Wandling (Evansville, Indiana) went seven-plus inning to get his third win of the year. Wandling (3-1) allowed eight hits and one unearned run, while striking out three.
 
Senior right-hander Brandon Shaw (Cuba, Illinois) relieved Wandling in the eighth and got the Eagles out of the inning with only one run scoring.  Chavarria finished the game for his third save of the year, pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
 
In the nightcap, Eickhoff drove in three of runs and senior right-hander Matt Bowles (Mt. Washington, Kentucky) struck out a season-best six batters as the Eagles completed the sweep with a 3-1 victory.

Eickhoff drove in the game's first run in the second inning with a double, knocked in the the eventual game-winning run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, and added an insurance run in the sixth with his second double of the game. He finished the day two-for-five with four RBIs and a pair of doubles.
 
Bowles (3-1) posted the complete game victory by going seven innings and allowing one run on three hits. He did not walk a batter in the seven innings.
 
The Eagles and the Panthers completed the four-game series Sunday with a noon doubleheader at the USI Baseball Field.
