EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana junior shortstop/right-handed reliever
Matt Chavarria (Carlsbad, New Mexico) drove in the game's only run and posted his second save of the year to lead the Screaming Eagles to a 1-0 victory over Augustana College Tuesday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI rises to 8-4 overall, while Augustana falls to 6-6.
Chavarria produced the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the fourth when he hammered a one-out double to left center, scoring designated hitter
Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) from second base. Weinzapfel started the run scoring rally with a one-out single to center and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch.
On the mound, Chavarria got the final out in the ninth when he got the only batter he would face to fly out to left on four pitches.
USI junior right-hander
Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) started on the hill for the Eagles, allowing two hits and striking out two in a pair of innings before giving way to senior right-hander
David Toth (Danville, Illinois). Toth (1-1) picked up his first victory of the season, permitting two hits and a walk while striking out two through three shutout innings.
Eagles' junior right-hander
Andrew Mercer (Mount Pearl, Newfoundland) set the stage for Chavarria in the ninth when completed 3.2 innings of shutout baseball. Mercer allowed two hits and struck out a team-high three batters in his third appearance of the season.
The Eagles complete the 13-game homestand this weekend when they open Great Lakes Valley Conference action against Drury University. The four-game series with the Panthers starts with a 3 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and concludes with a noon twin bill Sunday.
