Eagles change to three-game series with Tiffin
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Mother Nature has forced the University of Southern Indiana baseball to convert its schedule for the Dunn Hospitality Tournament to a three-game series with Tiffin University, beginning Friday at 2 p.m. The series will continue Saturday at 1 p.m., while the series finale slated for Sunday at noon.
The Screaming Eagles enter this week's action looking to get back on track after dropping the three-game series to sixth-ranked Grand Valley State University to start the 13-game homestand. USI won the series opener, 2-1, but lost the second game 2-1 and the series finale, 12-6.
Tiffin has started the year with a victory at LeMoyne College, but has three-straight contest, falling once to Millersville University and twice to Indiana University, Pennsylvania.
USI leads the all-time series with Tiffin, 5-1, with the last meetings coming in 2012. The Eagles took the last series from the Dragons, falling in the opener, 5-3, and winning the final two of the series, 10-1 and 11-1.
SCREAMING EAGLES BASEBALL NOTES:
Surprises out of the bullpen. Junior right-handers
Scott Haag (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) and
Andrew Mercer (Mount Pearl, Newfoundland) were pleasant surprises out of the bullpen versus GVSU. Haag appeared in two of the games, allowing one run on five hits and struck out four in five innings of work. Mercer threw a perfect two innings in the series finale, striking out five of the six batters faced.
Tough no-decision for Wright. Junior right-hander
Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) suffered a tough no-decision in the series opener with GVSU. Wright allowed one run on four hits in eight strong innings of work before leaving the game with a 1-0 lead and runners on in the ninth.
Cope leads the hitters versus GVSU. Sophomore first baseman
Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana) led all hitters versus GVSU, batting .364 with two runs scored and a pair of doubles.
Season leader at the plate. Sophomore outfielder
Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) leads all Eagle hitters through six games with a .423 batting average and four RBIs. He also is tied for the team lead with two doubles and is second with a pair of stolen bases.
Weinzapfel breaks out of slump. Senior designated hitter/outfielder
Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) broke out of his broke out of his 0-for-11 slump to start the year with a pair of hits in his final two at-bats versus GVSU.

Tracy Archuleta has a USI record of 265-141 (.650) in seven-plus seasons and is 403-265 (.603) in 12-plus seasons as a head coach. He was named the ABCA Division II Coach of the Year after leading the Screaming Eagles to the 2010 national championship.
Eagles at the USI Baseball Field. The Eagles are 155-57 (.731) when playing at the USI Baseball Field since 2007 and 235-138 (.630) since 2000.
