TURLOCK, Calif. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team got into the win column for the first time in 2014 with an 8-1 victory over California State University Stanislaus Sunday afternoon in Turlock, California. USI starts the year 1-2, while CSUS has posted a record of 4-3 to start its 2014 campaign.
The Screaming Eagles took command early and built a 5-0 lead with single runs in second and fifth and a three-run rally in the sixth. CSUS cut into the USI margin in the bottom of the sixth, but the Eagles took back the momentum and sealed the 8-1 victory with a second three-run rally in the eighth.
USI sophomore rightfielder
Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore third baseman
Trent Gunn (Tell City, Indiana) led the Eagles offensive attack with three hits each in the win. Kempf also had a team-best two RBIs and scored twice.
On the mound, senior right-hander
Matt Bowles (Mt. Washington, Kentucky) picked up USI first win of the year after seven dominating innings. Bowles (1-0) allowed one run on six hits, while striking out three.
Senior right-hander
David Toth (Danville, Illinois) finished the game for USI on the mound, throwing the last two innings. Toth allowed a walk and struck out two in getting the final two outs.
The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field when they host Grand Valley State University for a three-game series February 21-23. The home opener on Friday is a 2 p.m. first pitch. GVSU is making its first visit to the USI Baseball Field since the 2010 NCAA II Midwest Regional when the Eagles advanced to the NCAA II Championship Series and won its first national championship.
