TURLOCK, Calif. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team came up short in its season opener, falling to California State University Stanislaus, 3-0, Friday night in Turlock, California. USI starts the year 0-1, while CSUS has posted a record of 3-2 to start its 2014 campaign.
The Warriors scored one in the second inning on a home run and pushed across two more tallies in the seventh to seal the victory. USI junior right-hander
Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) started and took the loss for the Eagles, allowing the second inning home run.
Despite the loss, Wright had a strong start to his season. The junior right-hander allowed three hits and one earned run, while striking out three over four-plus innings of work.
Wright was followed to the mound by sophomore right-hander
Tyler Nichols (Newburgh, Indiana) and junior right-hander
Scott Haag (Ft. Wayne, Indiana). Nichols allowed two runs, one earned in his USI debut on two hits and a walk, while striking out two over 2.1 innings of work.
Haag, who also made his USI debut, pitched a scoreless 1.2 innings and struck out one.
At the plate, the Screaming Eagles were held scoreless, but were able to generate seven hits in the season opener. Senior designated hitter
Jonathon Wandling (Evansville, Indiana) picked up a pair of hits in his first appearance in a USI jersey, while sophomore rightfielder
Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore first baseman
Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana) also produced two hits each.
