EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team drained nine of its first 10 attempts from three-point range en route to a 100-49 route of Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division foe McKendree University Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.
USI (14-5, 8-3 GLVC) connected on 10 three-pointers in the opening frame and led 53-25 at the break; then outscored the visiting Bearcats 16-0 in the first six-plus minutes of the second half to build a commanding 44-point cushion.
Junior guard
Libby Ogden drained three of the Screaming Eagles' shots from downtown in the first half and had all of her team-high 13 points at the break. Senior guard
Stephanie Carpenter also hit three shots from behind the arc in the first period, where she scored nine of her 11 points.
The Eagles gave up 12 points to the Bearcats in the first 5:30 of the game, but after a timeout by USI Head Coach
Rick Stein, the Eagles clamped down on the defensive end. USI, which led 17-12 at that juncture, proceeded to go on a 23-5 spurt throughout the next seven minutes to essentially put the game out of reach.
USI, which shot 55.6 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, including 71.4 percent from downtown, led by as much as 30 before settling on the 28-point halftime cushion.
The Eagles shot 58.1 percent in the second half and drained four more three-pointers to finish with 14 for the game. USI held McKendree to just 21.4 percent from the floor (6-of-28) in the second half and allowed just one field goal inside the arc.
All of USI's 14 players scored, with Ogden leading four Eagles in double-figures. Junior forward/centers
Anna Hackert and
Mary O'Keefe also added 11 points apiece for the Eagles, who held a 47-28 rebounding edge and led by as much as 53 points.
Hackert, despite playing just 16 minutes, finished with her third straight double-double as she collected 14 rebounds to go along with a career-high five blocks. Junior forward/center
Cayla Herbst added four blocks, six rebounds, and six points for USI, which had 11 blocks as a team, its highest total since November of 2009.
USI's reserves outscored McKendree's bench, 52-20, as USI reached the century mark in a conference game for the first time since losing a 101-100 triple-overtime decision to the University of Indianapolis in January of 2011.
Junior guard Caty Ponce paced the Bearcats (7-11, 2-8 GLVC) with 15 points, while sophomore guard Ashley Klass chipped in 11 points.
The Eagles, who posted their largest margin of victory over a GLVC opponent since defeating Quincy University, 102-47, in February of 1999, return to action Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when they visit league-newcomer Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri.
