EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team used a strong first-half effort to defeat Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Missouri University of Science & Technology, 91-62, Thursday evening at the Physical Activities Center.
USI (9-2, 3-0 GLVC) shot 65.5 percent (19-29) in the opening period and used runs of 12-0 and 18-0 to race out to a comfortable 54-24 lead at the break. Junior forward/center
Anna Hackert scored 20 of her game-high 28 points in the first 15 minutes of the game, while junior guard
Autumn Miller collected all of her season-best four steals in the first half.
Hackert had seven points in the Screaming Eagles' 12-0 run that turned a four-point advantage into a 24-8 lead. Senior guard
Stephanie Carpenter also hit one of her two first-half three-pointers in the run that put the Eagles up by 16 with 12 minutes to play in the frame.
The Eagles benefitted from a pair of three-pointers, one by senior guard
Jessica Parker and the other by Miller, during their 18-0 run. Hackert added another five points in the outburst and junior guard
Mariah Nimmo hit four straight free throws as the Eagles turned a 16-point edge into a commanding 34-point lead with three minutes remaining in the first half.
Missouri S&T (5-7, 1-3 GLVC) chipped away at the Eagles lead in the early stages of the second half. The Miners held the Eagles to just seven points in the first six minutes of the frame and trailed 61-37, but a three-point play by Hackert followed by a layup by senior forward/center
Nicole Hazemi put USI up 66-37 with 11:36 to play.
Carpenter, who finished with 16 points, used a baseline layup and a three-pointer moments later to stake the Eagles to a 72-39 advantage with less than 10 minutes to play.
The Eagles, who led by as many as 35, never let their lead slip below 26 points the remainder of the contest as they defeated the Miners for the second time in 14 tries.
In addition to Hackert's 28 points, the reigning GLVC Player of the Week also had seven rebounds in just 20 minutes of work. Carpenter finished with four three-pointers, while Miller added 10 points and a season-high six assists in the victory. Junior forward/center
Mary O'Keefe also contributed five assists and three steals, while Hazemi finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
USI out-rebounded the Miners 41-32 and shot 55.0 percent (33-60) from the field for the game, including 57.1 percent (8-14) from three-point range.
The Eagles return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host No. 10 Drury University at the PAC. The Panthers (11-1, 3-1 GLVC) defeated Bellarmine University, 82-75, Thursday in Louisville, Kentucky.
