SOMERS, Wis.—Junior forward/centers
Anna Hackert and
Mary O'Keefe combined for 30 points and 23 rebounds as the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 58-45, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division contest Saturday afternoon.
USI (12-5, 6-3 GLVC) held the host Rangers scoreless in a 12-minute stretch that saw the Screaming Eagles extend a 38-36 advantage into a commanding 49-36 cushion with just over two minutes to play.
O'Keefe and Hackert—each of whom had a bucket in the 11-0 run that essentially sealed the victory for the Eagles—helped USI dominate the contest inside the paint. The Eagles, who held a 50-32 rebounding advantage, outscored the Rangers, 24-8, in the paint and held a commanding 22-1 lead in second-chance points.
Hackert finished with 16 points and a season-high 17 rebounds, while O'Keefe added 14 points and six rebounds.
"To win the boards, 50-32, that's something we haven't done lately," USI Head Coach
Rick Stein said. "We totally dominated the glass today. We did a great job of blocking out, then going and getting the ball."
UW-Parkside (6-11, 2-7 GLVC) kept pace with the Eagles in the opening frame as it drained seven three-pointers. USI, however, held the Rangers to just 2-of-7 shooting from inside the arc as it took a 29-27 lead into the intermission.
The Rangers, who were 9-of-33 from three-point range and just 5-of-14 inside the three-point arc, tied the game in the early stages of the second half, but a three-pointer by senior guard
Stephanie Carpenter gave USI a 32-29 lead it would not relinquish.
USI, which snapped a two-game skid with the win, led 38-36 after UW-Parkside freshman forward/center Bailey North hit a jumper with 14:08 to play.
Neither team scored for the next minute, but a pair of free throws by senior guard
Jessica Parker broke the scoring drought and gave USI a four-point edge. The Eagles increased their advantage to 42-36 on a layup by senior forward/center
Nicole Hazemi with 11:34 to play; then, following a near three-minute scoring drought, O'Keefe gave the Eagles' a 44-36 cushion with a layup.
Junior guard
Autumn Miller hit a three-pointer to give USI an 11-point edge with eight minutes to play, while Hackert's layup with less than five minutes left put USI up 49-36.
"To make runs, you have to get consistent stops on the other end," Stein said. "They had a lot of possessions in that run and we were able to get stops."
In addition to Hackert and O'Keefe, USI got 12 points and four steals from Carpenter, while Parker added seven rebounds. USI's bench outscored UW-Parkside's reserves, 10-2, with Hazemi adding six points.
USI returns to action Thursday at 5:15 p.m. when it hosts the University of Illinois Springfield at the Physical Activities Center.
