LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Turnovers and a near seven-minute long scoring drought were too much for the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team to overcome as the Screaming Eagles suffered a 72-62 Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division setback to Bellarmine University Monday evening at Knights Hall.
Despite committing 14 turnovers in the first period, the Eagles, who once again were without GLVC leading scorer
Anna Hackert, found themselves trailing by just two points (36-34) at the break.
USI (11-4, 5-2 GLVC) scored early in the second half on a layup by junior guard
Libby Ogden to tie the score at 36, but a 16-2 Bellarmine run that featured the lengthy USI scoring drought allowed the Knights to build a 14-point cushion the Eagles could not overcome.
The Eagles, who stayed close to the Knights in the first half by countering their offensive miscues with a perfect 12-of-12 effort at the free throw line, went 10 minutes without a field goal as the Knights extended their advantage to 16 with seven minutes to go.
Back-to-back three-pointers by freshman guard/forward Jessica Hardin helped the Knights push their lead to 18 later in the frame, but an 8-1 Eagles' spurt cut Bellarmine's cushion to 68-57 with 2:31 to play.
USI, however, could not sustain the momentum as Bellarmine's lead never slipped below 10 points.
Senior guard
Stephanie Carpenter, the reigning GLVC Player of the Week, had a team-high 14 points and career-high eight rebounds to pace the Eagles. Junior forward/center
Mary O'Keefe matched Carpenter with 14 points, while senior forward/center
Nicole Hazemi chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds. Ogden finished with nine points and six rebounds.
USI out-rebounded the Knights, 40-31, but shot just 39.6 percent from field, including 34.6 percent in the second half.
Sophomore forward Sarah Galvin paced Bellarmine (8-7, 4-3 GLVC), which took 14 more shots than USI, with 17 points. Sophomore guard Mackenzie Martinez added 15 points and seven assists, while Hardin chipped in 14.
The Eagles return to action Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when they travel to Romeoville, Illinois, to take on No. 25 Lewis University. The Flyers (12-3, 6-1 GLVC) suffered a 51-50 setback to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Monday evening in Somers, Wisconsin. USI concludes its three-game road swing Saturday at 1 p.m. with a trip to UW-Parkside.
