EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Senior guard
Stephanie Carpenter scored a game-high 21 points and senior forward/center
Nicole Hazemi grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds as the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team shocked No. 14 University of Indianapolis, 73-44, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division showdown Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.
After surrendering the first basket of the game to the visiting Greyhounds, who entered the game with a GLVC-best 10-game winning streak, the Screaming Eagles scored nine straight to build a seven-point advantage five minutes into the contest.
UIndy (14-3, 5-1 GLVC) cut the Eagles' lead to four with 11:22 to play in the first half, but an 8-0 USI run that featured a three-pointer and fast-break layup by Carpenter staked USI to a 23-11 edge with nine minutes left in the first period.
Carpenter scored 17 of her 21 points in the first half as the Eagles extended their advantage to 35-19 at the break.
USI (11-3, 5-1 GLVC) used a stifling defensive effort throughout the contest as it held the Greyhounds to just 25.8 percent (17-66) from the floor, including 21.9 percent (7-32) in the first period.
Playing without the GLVC's leading scorer in junior forward/center
Anna Hackert, who suffered a concussion in USI's win over Saint Joseph's College Thursday night, the Eagles dominated the paint. USI out-rebounded the Greyhounds, 50-37, including 31-19 in the first 20 minutes, and held a 24-14 advantage in points in the paint.
The Eagles needed that presence in the second period as the Greyhounds chipped into a USI lead that had grown to 21 points with 15:30 to play.
After the Greyhounds cut the Eagles' advantage to 14 with 10 minutes to play, junior forward/center
Mary O'Keefe connected on a jumper from just inside the free throw line to break a 5-0 UIndy spurt. O'Keefe scored an old-fashioned three-point play a minute later as USI built a 54-35 lead with 8:40 to play.
O'Keefe, who scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half, got another jumper to fall from the baseline with just over seven minutes to play to give USI a commanding 22-point cushion (60-38). The Eagles never looked back as they extended that advantage to as much as 30 before settling on the 29-point win.
In addition to her 16 rebounds, Hazemi added 11 points and three assists as she earned her first-career double-double in her first career start. Junior guard
Taylor Stevenson and senior guard
Jessica Parker each added eight points, while junior guard
Autumn Miller finished with five points and a game-high four assists.
Miller, who added four rebounds and two steals, connected on a key three-pointer early in the second half to help the Eagles keep momentum in their favor. Parker chipped in seven rebounds, while O'Keefe added six boards to the Eagles' rebounding total.
USI returns to action Monday at 4:45 p.m. (CST) when it travels to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on Bellarmine University and USI Hall of Fame coach Chancellor Dugan. The Knights (7-7, 3-3 GLVC) defeated Saint Josephs, 91-83, Saturday in Louisville.
