LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team broke a three-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over Bellarmine University Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky. Game two that had been rescheduled for Saturday had to be called due rain.

USI rises to 30-18 overall and 19-16 in the GLVC, while Bellarmine falls to 26-20, 20-13 GLVC. The Screaming Eagles and the Knights will try to finish the four-game series at 11 a.m. (CDT) Sunday, but heavy rains are in the forecast. The Eagles need a victory in the final regular season game, plus help in a number of scenarios to qualify for the GLVC Tournament.

The Eagles kept their GLVC Tournament hopes alive in dramatic fashion with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to defeat the Knights, 5-3. Freshman designated hitter Kyle Niemeier (Evansville, Indiana) drove in junior rightfielder Brad wannemuehler (Evansville, Indiana) and the game-winning run on a two-out double, while freshman leftfielder Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana) crossed the plate with an insurance run on a throwing error.

USI began the game with a 2-0 lead with a tally in each of the first two innings. Junior designated hitter Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) drove in USI's first run with a first inning double, while Wannemuehler knocked in the second run with a single in the second inning.

Bellarmine responded with a tally in the third, fourth, and fifth, to take a 3-2 lead. USI freshman catcher Ryan Bertram (Zionsville, Indiana) tied the score with a two-out single in the sixth and set the stage for the seventh inning.

On the mound, junior right-hander Matt Bowles (Mt. Washington, Kentucky) went the distance to get his ninth win of the season. Bowles allowed three runs, two earned, on 11 hits and one walk. He also struck out five in his seven innings of work.
