EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team dropped both games of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader to top-ranked University of Indianapolis Sunday at the USI Softball Field. The Screaming Eagles lost game one, 5-0, before losing game two, 5-1, in nine innings.
After being held to just one hit in game one, the Eagles battled the Greyhounds to a scoreless tie through three-plus innings. Junior
Kelsey Jankowski broke the tie with a solo home run down the rightfield line in the bottom of the fourth frame.
Behind the pitching efforts of freshman
Sarah Owens, who allowed just one run off seven hits, the Eagles held a potent Greyhounds lineup scoreless for six innings.
UIndy (34-2, 16-0 GLVC), a winner of 27 straight, got a leadoff double from freshman Jenny Thompson in the seventh inning. After a sacrifice bunt put the tying run at third base with one out and an error to put the go-ahead run at first, freshman Erica Goodwin hit a hard line drive right back to Owens, who nearly caught it. Instead, the ball ricocheted off her glove, allowing the Greyhounds to score the tying run.
Sophomore
Brooke Harmening, who was charged with the loss in game one, came on in relief in the seventh and prevented any more damage as the two teams went into extra frames.
USI (19-12, 9-9 GLVC) threatened with runners at first and second and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but UIndy's Jennifer DeMotte, who earned the win in both contests, came on in relief to end USI's scoring chance.
The Greyhounds benefitted from a questionable obstruction call that could have been judged as a runner's interference in the top half of the ninth inning to put runners at first and second with one out.
Harmening (15-6), who gave up nine runs off 11 hits on the day, induced Goodwin into a fielder's choice ground out on the next play. Indianapolis, however, followed with three straight two-out singles as it scored four times.
USI went down in order in the bottom of the ninth inning as it suffered its third straight setback.
In game one, the Greyhounds had a pair of two-out singles in the first inning to forge a 1-0 advantage. They had a single, double, and a triple in the second frame to score four more times and build a 5-0 cushion.
Freshman
Kaitlyn England had the Eagles' only hit in the opening game.
USI returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. (CDT) when it travels to Indianapolis to take on the Greyhounds in another GLVC twinbill.
