EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team and the University of Indianapolis split a marathon doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles took the opener in dramatic fashion, winning 5-4 in 18 innings, while the Greyhounds turned the tables by winning the nightcap in the last inning, 4-3.
USI sees its record go to 15-12 overall and 6-11 in the GLVC, while UIndy goes to 15-12, 7-10 GLVC.
The Eagles won the game one marathon with a pair of runs in the 18
th inning to defeat the Greyhounds, 5-4. USI freshman first baseman

The 18
th inning comeback marked the third time in the game that the Eagles had to overcome a deficit. USI scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game the first time, 2-2, and got the game to extra innings. The Eagles forced extra frames for a second time in the eighth with a tally to tie the game 3-3.
USI junior right-hander
David Toth (Danville, Illinois) picked up the win, pitching the final five innings. Toth (4-2) allowed one run on one hit, while striking out four.
The Eagles started the game with sophomore right-hander
Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana), who allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits, while striking out two. Senior left-hander
Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois) followed, pitching a third of an inning, before giving way to sophomore right-hander
Craig Austin (Evansville, Indiana).
Austin gave USI a strong six innings of work, allowing two hits and getting the Eagles out of a bases-loaded jam.
Overall, the Eagles and the Greyhounds combined for 120 at-bats and 507 pitches over the 18 innings. The game also lasted 4:45.
UIndy turned the tables on USI in the nightcap, scoring twice with two outs in the top of the seventh to defeat the Eagles, 4-3.
The Greyhounds took the initial lead in the top of the first before the Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead. UIndy rebounded with a run in the top of the third to tie the 2-2. The score would remain tied until the bottom of the fifth.

In the top of the seventh, USI would get the first two, but an error opened the flood gates for UIndy to get the 4-3 victory.
USI sophomore right-hander
Jay Hachmeister (Tennysen, Indiana) took the loss after coming within one out of his first save of the year. Hachmeister (0-1) allowed two unearned runs on two hits, while striking out two in 1.2 innings of work.
The UIndy comeback also cost Toth his second win of the day. Toth started game two and went five innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out three. The junior right-hander threw 10 innings in the two games, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out seven.
The Eagles and the Greyhounds conclude the four-game set Sunday at 1 p.m.
