Eagles clobber Panthers, 14-2

Niemeier leads the way with 5 hits, 5 RBIs

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored a season-high nine times in the third inning and cruised to a 14-2 win over Kentucky Wesleyan College Wednesday evening at the USI Baseball Field. USI sees its record rise to 14-10 overall and 5-9 in the GLVC, while KWC goes to 8-17, 3-11 GLVC.
 
The Screaming Eagles erased an early 1-0 deficit with the nine-run frame in the bottom of the third. USI freshman second baseman Kyle Niemeier (Evansville, Indiana) highlighted the rally with a three-run triple to right field to the give USI a 9-1 advantage. The Eagles also got back-to-back run scoring doubles from senior catcher Colton White (Springfield, Illinois) and freshman first baseman Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana).
 
USI sealed the victory the next inning with a four-run fourth to give the Eagles a 13-1 margin. Cope had the big hit in the four-run fourth, starting USI's second rally with a two-run double.
 
Niemeier ended the scoring for the Eagles by driving in the 14th run in the top of sixth with his fifth hit of the game. The freshman second baseman finished the game five-for-five with five RBIs, and a triple.  
 
On the mound, junior right-hander Matt Bowles (Mt. Washington, Kentucky) posted his team-best fifth game of the year. Bowles (5-2) allowed one unearned run on two hits and two walks, while striking out four in four innings of work.
 
The Eagles continue the homestand this weekend when they host the University of Indianapolis for a four-game series April 5-7. The series begins with a 6 p.m. single game Friday, followed by a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday, and a 1 p.m. single game Sunday.
 
The Greyhounds (13-11, 5-9 GLVC) enter the season as the defending GLVC and NCAA II Midwest Regional champion.
