LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore
Brooke Harmening earns a win, collects a save and knocks in three runs as the University of Southern Indiana softball team swept Bellarmine University Saturday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference twinbill. The Screaming Eagles improve to 28-17 and 16-14 in league play after downing the Knights 7-0 in game one and 6-1 in the final contest
Game one
Harmening and junior
Kelsey Jankowski each drove in a run in the opening inning to spot USI a 2-0 lead. Harmening then took care of the rest, as the sophomore hurler allowed just two hits in her complete game victory.
The Whiteland, Indiana, native did not allow her first hit until the sixth inning and then gave up a bleeder in the seventh.
In the third, Harmening again came up big at the dish with her second RBI of the afternoon.
Junior
Teri Newmaster added the Eagles fourth run on an infield single and the final run was brought home by freshman
Janna Green's RBI single.
Game two
The Screaming Eagles again scored two first inning tallies when sophomore
MacKenzi Dorsam singled home freshman
Toni Braun on a bunt. Harmening then added to her RBI total when she knocked in Dorsam.
Freshman pitcher
Sarah Owens gave back a run in the first and loaded the bases with nobody out, but was able to get out of the jam by popping out the next three Bellarmine batters.
Owens again got into some troubles in the third, when she walked a pair with two-outs. However, she struck out Tanner Tevis to end the Knights threat.
With game still in a pitchers duel at 2-1, junior
Kyla Gogel gave USI two insurance runs with a two-RBI double in the sixth. Newmaster added an RBI to push Gogel home for USI's final run.
Next up for the Eagles is the regular season finale doubleheader at McKendree University Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.
