Dokey scores from second on infield hit

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana junior second baseman
A.J. Dokey (Howell, Michigan) scored from second base on an infield single to give the Screaming Eagles a 3-2 win over McKendree University Friday night at the USI Baseball Field. USI raises its record to 26-15 overall and 15-14 in the GLVC, while McKendree goes to 18-19, 13-16 GLVC.
Dokey scored the winning run from second on a slow-rolling base hit to shortstop by junior pinch hitter
Brad Wannemuehler (Evansville, Indiana) with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. The ninth started with Dokey walking and moving to second base on a sacrifice by freshman first baseman
Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana). Senior designated hitter
Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) grounded out on a hot shot to third for the second out and set the stage for Wannemuehler.
The Eagles reached the bottom of the ninth when USI junior right-hander
Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the inning. Wright (6-4), who threw 145 pitches (98 strikes), allowed two runs, one earned, on eight hits and one walk. He also struck out six batters.
McKendree scored first with a pair of tallies in the fifth inning to take a 2-0 lead. USI got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth when Dokey scored on a one-out double by senior catcher
Colton White (Springfield, Illinois).
The Eagles knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth. USI freshman leftfielder
Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana) scored the tying run after stealing second, advancing to third on a throwing error by the catcher, and crossed the plate on a throwing error by the centerfielder trying to get him at third.
The Eagles and Bearcats continue the four-game series Saturday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader. The series concludes Sunday with USI Senior Day at 1 p.m. USI will honor the six seniors at 12:40 p.m. Sunday prior to the home finale.
